“Mystery” Illness Seems to Be Waning

The canine infectious respiratory disease complex (CIRDC … translation: respiratory illness of unknown cause) seen late in 2023 across multiple states continues to be a mystery. However, it also seems to be dwindling. That’s according to Dr. Scott Weese, professor of pathobiology at the University of Guelph Ontario Veterinary College.

In a December 2023 post on his site, Dr. Weese detailed the possible causes of the illness. In a January 10, 2024 post, he affirms that despite our still not knowing the cause of CIRDC, cases seem to be going down.

At this point, what is a dog lover to do? Make sure your dog is up to date on vaccinations (especially those missed during the pandemic), consider short-nosed breeds as at higher risk for respiratory illnesses in general, and be mindful of social interactions with dogs who seem to be ill.
