About Sarah Brien
Dr. Sarah Brien’s goal is help pet parents deeply understand their dogs and their care. Decreasing suffering for pets and the people who love them is at the heart of everything she does.
Originally from Hearne, Texas, she is currently a mobile practice vet providing palliative, hospice, and end-of-life care to families in Central Texas. She also works in relief medicine for general practices and urgent care practices in Houston, Austin, and Dallas-Fort Worth. She was a licensed wildlife rehabilitator in Massachusetts who worked to save small mammals and songbirds. She’s also worked with big cat conservation and rehabilitation in rural South Africa.
Work is her passion, but to balance out her calling Dr. Brien loves traveling, reading, spending time with friends, family, and, of course, her heart dog chihuahua mix, Evie.
Dr. Brien joins her colleagues at DogCancer.com to help dog lovers understand the constantly evolving diagnosis, treatment, and palliation of dog cancer. As heart-breaking as it is that many cases are not yet curable, she reminds us all that there are many more tools at our disposal to help dogs live happily in the time they have left.
My Dog
When she arrived at the animal shelter during my clinical rotation, Evie was dangerously underweight, suffering from tick-borne illnesses and an autoimmune disease, and she had a large wound on her shoulder. I instantly fell in love with her fierceness, and I grew to know her sweetness as she warmed up to me and my veterinary team.
She is now in remission from her immune disease, extremely active, and growing more confident with every new skill we learn at training classes!
I took care of Evie when she needed me, and she cared for me through my final year of vet school, a cross-country move, my first year of practice, and the many challenges of the new normal. Evie is always up for eating treats, having a dance party, cuddling on the couch, or going on a long walk. She is playful, intense, determined, gentle, affectionate- my perfect companion, a reminder to persist despite adversity, and the best roommate ever!
